Re: Splitting Tracks between two turnouts... #Bug #New

Thanks, I agree entirely default should be connect - I discovered by accident (when gradient calculations seemed to go haywire) that I sometimes needed use "Connect" between tracks that looked perfectly joined.  But the only regular use I've found for "Split" is when I want to show tunnel mouths midway along a track.

Already have a groups.io account? #Group

Hi all,

Do you already have a groups.io account but with a different email address?

Do you want to use that email address for this group as well?

Easy to change - Yes!

When you sign in to groups.io using the email id you don't want anymore.
Go to account (Top Right of screen).
There you change the email address to be identical to the one you do want
When you click Save - a special prompt pops up asking if you want to "Merge" the two Ids.
If you want to merge - click yes,
This will prompt groups.io to send an email to the "good" account which will have a link to click on,
Then sign in as that userid and say "Yes" to Merge.
The identities will be merged with all the content and subscriptions from them under the good email address and the id you didn't want will be deleted.

Done with a bit of a prompt from this groups admin team - thanks for the assist.

Chris,

The “split” here is really an “un-connect”. The endpoints are bound together by an explicit or implicit connect. Just being close enough does not make a connection. This connected state affects certain commands like Select with Shift and ensures that Elevations flow and Trains don’t stop.

in V5.2 the default is now to connect tracks by default in Move and Rotate and in the Track Add commands. An anchor of two blue circles on the ends of the tracks one open (align target) and one filled (align source) are shown when the ends are close together regardless of angle. Releasing the mouse will cause the ends to align and connect. This can be inhibited with Shift.

i felt that the bias should be to connect rather than don’t connect. The net effect is that snapping tracks together is easier whether when adding or repositioning.

I'm confused - why would anyone ever need to split at an endpoint?  The split is there by default, surely?

I got a question today from a user about what to do if someone needs to change userid/email because the same person owns two and wants to consolidate.

There is support in groups.io for users to self-service and merge two ids and preserve all subscriptions and messages under one email id.

  • You sign in to groups.io using the email id you don't want anymore.
  • You go to account (Top Right of screen). In there you change the email address to be identical to the one you do want and hit Save.
  • A special prompt pops up asking if you want to "Merge" the two Ids.
  • If you say yes, the "good" account will be sent an email with a link in it.
  • You have to click on the link, sign in as the desired userid and say "Yes" to Merge in the old id.
Your two identities will be merged with all the content and subscriptions from both under the good email address and the id you didn't want will be deleted.

Mike,
I am by no means an expert in Pi, raspberry or otherwise, always thought it would be interesting to use one for running block telegraph equipment, though.

Anyway - the likeliest culprit is the "screen"/drivers system for the 4 being different than the 3 in a library which I think is called Pi3D?  And it itself is an interface to OpenVG, perhaps?  The rectangle you are talking about is actually a transparent colored overlay, so that's where I would start trying to see what can be done.

This complaint seems familiar ->  https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=254790&p=1554370

Overall It seems like the color depth of the PI display is not the same as that of the Windows/Mac - and so transparent alpha values may not be mapped the same and choices may have been made for the sw platform that alter transparency in particular.

Sorry I can't be of more help,
Adam

Re: Hashtags #Group

Ron,
Just to be vaguely aware that groups thinks of a # and  following characters before a space as being a tag in the Subject line. It's no big whoop - and it's fixable afterwards.

So, if a subject is -> "How many #s' formats are for "English" #s as opposed to metric #'s formats", Groups.io will think that's three new tags -> #s', #s and #'s".

I, or the other moderators, can classify by adding or subtracting them as we need.

Hi Adam.
More work you’ve done for the group. Do you ever sleep? :)
Can you tell us what you mean by being careful about our use of hashtags in the topic line. What issues do they cause? Should we just avoid them?
And thanks to you I learned a new word today - octothorpe. I’ll have to look up the etymology. Thanks.

Meanwhile If you can remember to be careful about using the octothorpe aka hash -> symbol "#" in the subject/topic line, that will reduce the amount of clean-up needed.

Raspberry pi 4 issue #raspberrypi #HowTo

mikebo21048

I have just recently setup a Raspberry pi 4 to run JMRI and xtrkcad. I built my pi using the JMRI Image produced by Steve Todd. I have found a problem using the model 4 that doesn’t exist on a pi3b. On the map, the area that is normally shaded to show the area of your layout that you are working, this area of the map is now blank. That portion of the layout is not visible on the map and if you move the blank area around the map it blanks out any area that it covers. It acts like it is erasing it from the map. If you close the map and reopen it, the blanked area reappears. Also, if you try to setup a print job, the area that would have been shaded as selected to print, is now blanked on the screen. This behavior is only occurring on my Raspberry pi 4. I put the memory card I am I using in in pi 4 in my pi 3b and it worked correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Mike

So I got a Catalina VM running and the trick that worked for me was

- Right-Click on the App, Select "Open". Reply to the scary message that it may damage your computer with "Open". This works where simply Clicking on the App doesn't.

The "Scary" prompt - say "Open"

This is great news another one of my groups migrated to the I.O. platform. Yahoo Groups lags for some reason on posts. Now all I need is time to read up on old posts.

Paul,
I haven't actually moved to Catalina yet - I have too many 32-bit utilities on my build machine....

It is likely that what is happening is that the program (being unsigned software) is tripping over the function called "GateKeeper" in OSX.  I know that Catalina has added something called notarization to the scheme. Our software is unsigned (and un-notarized) because Apple would only let us sign it if we were in the Developers program - which is either 100/year or if we are a non-profit, but one registered legally (have a D&B number, etc). It is on the list of possible things we could spend money on (along with domain registration).

I can confirm that this is how I got the program to work on Catalina.

1. Make sure you re-install XQuartz. This has to be done on every OSX version upgrade. The level of the sw may not have to change (I don't see anything new at xquartz.org yet) but it is important to redo the customization that it does during install. Ifg it is the first time you did this, logoff and log back on to get the X Window set up properly.
2.
- Right-click on the app and select "Open" from the context menu - and say "Open" to the scary "this may damage" prompt.

- Alternatively you could open a terminal window (Applications->Utilities->Terminal), navigate to the Applications folders "cd /Applications" and enter the command "xattr -d com.apple.quarantine xtrkcad.app" And then try again. This trick works by removing the flag that was attached to the file by the browser during download signalling that this came from the Internet

If gatekeeper is the issue, XQuartz will not have been started (no X logo jumping and then showing as open).

We will look into it, but I think that it is likely that unless we are developer program members, we wont be able to notarize even old versions of software.

Hi Adam.
A huge thank you for all the work you, and presumably Martin, have put into moving us to groups.io. It all seems to have gone well, although I suspect it might be like ducks on a pond: all the real work is going on under the surface.
And thanks to the two of you for the ongoing work on XtrackCAD, which goes from strength to strength. You’ve always been very accessible, and extremely responsive to any issues that are brought to your attention. The speed with which you apply fixes has always really impressed me.

You made it!  And now (as of October 20th) your content did as well!  The old group has been shut down.

Please feel free to post and interact here as you did on Yahoo, all about XtrackCAD (also known as XtrkCAD) now in V5.1.2a with a V5.2 beta in the near future.

For anyone who stumbled on this group latterly, I'm Adam, the junior partner in maintaining the program generously donated to open source by its creator Dave Bullis. The senior partner is Martin Fischer, who will be along soon to introduce himself, I expect.  And several others have made significant contributions, and we welcome those how want to practice the dark arts (aka multi-platform coding in C).

XTrackCAD the program lives on SourceForge at https://sourceforge.net/projects/xtrkcad-fork/ and we have a wiki at http://www.xtrkcad.org/Wikka/HomePage. You'll immediately notice that we have two names which is a historical artifact that I'll allow Martin to explain (if he chooses to).  But "tom-a-to/tom-ah-to" as we say, it's one of the best programs for planning model railway/railroad layouts and simulating their operation.  And it's FREE!

We have now transfrered the content and users.  Theses are the statistics I got from groups.io

  1. Total Members Processed: 5630
  2. Successfully Added: 4569
  3. Bounced Members (Skipped): 957
  4. Moderated Members: 4321
  5. Members on Digest: 579
  6. Undisclosed Emails (Skipped): 5

Only one message could not be transferred. I expect we will have some people choosing to unsubscribe which is fine - how to do that is on the bottom of the home page.

Enjoy!
